Two Major Wins In 11 Months Makes This Lucky Woodstock Store Popular

Richard Miller won $500,000 from the Shenandoah Express Mart this month.

When Richard Miller collected his half-million dollar Virginia Lottery scratch-off win from the Shenandoah Express Mart, he was the second big winner in less than a year.

The Woodstock retiree Richard Miller won $500,000 from the $5,000,000 Cash Blowout game ticket, which he bought from the Shenandoah Express Mart at 203 S. Main St. earlier this month.

Retiree Richard Miller won $500,000 from the Virginai Lottery Cash Blowout game.

Miller claimed his winnings at the Harrisonburg lottery office on Oct. 19, reported DNR.

Miller’s win follows that of Teresa Showman, a Maurertown truck driver, who won $2.5 million playing the Casino Cash scratch-off game at the same store in December.

The $500,000 prize is the second-highest amount possible players can win in the Cash Blowout game.

Teresa Showman, 59, of Maurertown, holds the replica of her $2.5 million dollar check.

Miller’s was the first of four such tickets to be redeemed since the game started in June 2014, according to the Virginia Lottery’s website.

The odds of winning the $5 million top prize are 1 in 1.8 million, the website said.

Jill VaughnJill Vaughan, the lottery’s director of communications, said that for the second time in 11 months, the Express Mart will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling a winning lottery ticket.

“It’s always exciting when that happens,” she said.

However, Vaughan cautioned lottery players who may now see the store as lucky.

“All lottery games are random and you never know where winning tickets are,” she said.

Miller is the second major lottery winner in the central Shenandoah Valley this month.

Brandon Caricofe of Grottoes won $100,000 playing the 10X the Money game. He bought the winning ticket from the Family Convenience Store in Elkton on Oct. 2.

ABOUT VIRGINIA LOTTERY SCRATCHERS:

From its beginnings in 1987, the Virginia Lottery has sold instant (scratcher) games. Originally, all scratch tickets were $1 each; in the mid-1990s, the first Bingo scratcher was introduced; each Bingo ticket cost $2. Eventually, higher-priced scratchers (including $3, $5, and $10) with larger prizes were introduced. Currently, the most expensive scratchers are $20 each. All $20 games currently in circulation and many $10 games offer a top prize of at least $1 million (annuitized). The largest prize offered to date in a Virginia scratcher is $5 million (annuity).
